Brilliant place all the staff are helpful and friendly very authentic to detail on everything steam locomotives gleaming and well looked after like the day they were built great place for young and old highly recommend.

Fantastic day out with the family on an old steam train from Pickering to Whitby for the day, lovely old engine and carriages to travel in and lovely staff that couldn't do enough for you.

My lady friend and I have had many enjoyable days out on the NYMR, but unfortunately our last trip in October 2024 was DEFINITELY not one of them. I described our unpleasant experiences in a balanced and factual review, posted both on this site and also on Tripadviser, entitled:
STANDING ROOM ONLY ON WHITBY PLATFORM.
Whilst the latter one-star review can still be found under Tripadviser Reviews of NYMR , the adverse review on this official NYMR site has mysteriously vanished.
There are several important managerial issues that we would like to discuss personally with your new CEO, Ms. Strangeway, but have been told repeatedly that this is not possible. Whilst your Customer Services have tried to be diplomatic and helpful, they have failed to address the problems described in my October review and are probably not empowered to review company policies nor to take disciplinary action against rogue employees or volunteers when required.
National and international interest in NYMR was at an all-time high after the excellent Channel 5 TV series entitled: 'The Yorkshire Steam Railway'. Unfortunately it has declined since then as a result of the Covid pandemic, changes in your Boardroom and unrealistically high ticket prices. Furthermore, the response to constructive or adverse reviews tends towards the dismissive, rather than the apologetic or explanatory.
In my opinion, the CEO should be available and prepared to discuss valid concerns that their customers raise.

We went on the santa Express 🎅
The staff were very very helpful. We had a issue with some ticket's, but it got sorted with no fuss. The train was very festive and Richard who entertained our carriage was such fun and worked very hard. A big shout out for him🤩 thanks everyone once again.

Poor!! Visited on 4/1/25 we travelled on the Whitby Express. On the return journey the weather deteriorated and upon leaving Goathland became darker. We were in coach A and there were no lights on, people were having to use their mobile phone torches to be able to see. At Pickering station there were people with walking difficulties trying to see the step to exit the carriage. The lighting from the platform, over the bridge to the car park was also bad. Why weren’t the Christmas lights turned on, on the bridge and footpath left on for visibility? With older people, children and people with disabilities traveling, surely this a health and safety issue.

Loved our trip from Pickering to Whitby on the Whitby Express. As it's Winter, there was only one train out and one back. We had about an hour and a half in Whitby so it was a quick look around.
We bought the annual passes so will be back.
Lovely staff and the carriage we were in was well restored and warm and comfortable.
There is a small buffet car for hot and cold drinks and snacks.
I can't fault the journey or train at all. Keen to go again!

2nd year running to visit the santa express, we had a great afternoon, well worth the visit.
We have bought tickets to use during the year,excellent value for money.

It seemed a little expensive when we booked it, but WOW! what a day.
The train was decorated beautifully and the staff were extremely friendly.
The meal was lovely and very filling with all staff wearing white gloves when serving.
Overall, it was a lovely 3 hours or so and will definitely return to NYMR in the summer
